Norman's Ark arrives at school
How very exciting to care for our animals! 5 goats and 2 pigs live at the school and are based on the Lewis Field, part of the school's 50 acre estate. They have become part of the Norman Court community very quickly but they don't join us for GAS and GAB at breaktime! Miss Pedlar, Head of Junior Department, oversees their welfare and care but has lots of help from the children.
By supporting the idea we are able to be part of the Growing Schools scheme run by the Government. This aims ‘to encourage and inspire all schools to use the outdoor classroom, both within and beyond the school grounds, as a context for learning across the curriculum'. It focuses particularly on food, farming and the countryside. It also encourages the children to get out of the classroom and away from computers into the fresh air, learning the responsibility of looking after something important. The animals play an important part in the ACE scheme which is a programme of study designed to help develop pupil's education and understanding of the environment around them. It is an IAPS (Independent Association of Prep Schools) initiative, is run nationally and is similar to the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. |
